Mod Crop
The Lace Market Theatre welcomes this production directed by Martin Berry MOD CROP is your return ticket to the mid 60s Track back with us and revisit those heady Mod days of that decade…the decade. This brand new musical drama from Steve Wallis (“Make Do And Mend”) and Alan Fletcher (“Quadrophenia” story consultant and novelist) portrays Mod life as it really was, out on the streets of England in 1965. Share the experiences of three Mod youths growing up in the white heat of the 60s, trying to “live cleanly under difficult circumstances”, daring to be different. Based on Alan Fletcher’s cult novel “Brummell’s Last Riff” – the first book in “The Mod Crop Trilogy” - the drama unfolds in a blaze of cool street style. The story is laced through with a sound track of iconic songs from the 60s and underscored by the staccato engine notes of Lambrettas and Vespas at full throttle. The songs, performed by fantastic singers and dancers with a live four piece band, include: “Lazy Sunday” (Small Faces) “Gimme Some Lovin'” and “Keep on Running” (Spencer Davis) “Going Out Of My Head” (Little Anthony and the Imperials) “Catch The Wind “ (Donovan) “The Clapping Song” (Shirley Ellis) “Substitute” (The Who) “The Crying Game” (Dave Berry) “You turned my bitter into Sweet” (Mary Love)..............and more. You know the score ! Whilst MOD CROP is set in the 1960s the themes of the drama are timeless....friendship and its consequence, relentless peer pressure and the thrills and terrors of adolescence are as crucial in whatever decade. The musical is brought to The Lace Market by Martin Berry, who also directed MOD CROP's first production last June at the Theatre Royal .This new production, staged prior to a possible London transfer in 2011, is on track to deliver all those elements which resuted in the critical acclaim on MOD CROP's premiere. Like the Mod culture it portrays, MOD CROP is already demonstrating, in rehearsal, its ability to reshape and reinivent itself for a new stage and audience …..like polishing the chrome and waxing the bodywork on the already fine lines of an Italian scooter........
